Thelma Addarich-López, Advocacy Supervisor Women in Distress of Broward County, Inc. The only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. They offer 24-hour crisis intervention through our 24-Hour Crisis Hotline and emergency shelter, as well as counseling and support for victims and their children. They also provide education and professional trainings on domestic violence and related topics in Broward County schools and in the community.
Juan Carlos Areán is the Senior Director of the National Latin@ Network for Healthy Families and Communities, a project of Casa de Esperanza. Since 1991, he has worked to engage men across different cultures to become better fathers, intimate partners and allies to end domestic violence and achieve gender equity.
Karina Aybar-Jacobs is a born and raised Dominican activist who came to the United States in 1999. She has a Bachelors Degree in Women’s Studies & Sociology from Hunter College and a Masters in Administration and Casework from the Hunter College School of Social Work. She joined the outstanding team of the Nuevo Amanecer Program from the Dominican Women’s Development Center (DWCD) in 2005. Currently, Karina is the Program Director at the Nuevo Amanecer/New Dawn Program since 2012. She is a young feminist who is very passionate about raising consciousness and promoting action around the issues of women’s rights, women of color, gender equality, domestic violence and assisting empower the underserved. She has participated during four consecutive years in the Vagina Monologues in Spanish, a play that was created to promote awareness against violence towards women. She is an active organizer of the “Brides March Against Domestic Violence” every September 26, as well as the organizer of the annual Nov. 25th Conference to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Karina is also a steering Committee Member of the Dominican Women’s Coalition, a collective of women leaders dedicated to increasing political power and influence in all issues pertaining to Dominican women and the Latino community in New York City.

Francesco Duberli, founder and Chief Executive of Survivors’ Pathway, is a clinical psychologist with master’s degrees in both public health and clinical mental health. He is known nationally and internationally for his work developing and implementing programs that promote equality, inclusion and social justice in United States and Latin America. His work has focused on developing awareness about the challenges; needs and barriers faced by the immigrant Latino community and the LGBTQI communities living in United States. Special emphasis has been given to the analysis and development of cultural and gender oriented interventions to prevent different types of violence experienced by these communities such as intimate partner violence, domestic violence, sexual abuse, human trafficking and other violent crimes. Mr. Duberli was elected in 2012 as chairman of Victim Response, The Lodge, and a domestic violence shelter in Miami Dade County. In 2013 Mr. Duberli was elected chairman of the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Council of Greater Miami (DVSAC). He has created and is currently leading the unique LGBT committee at the Domestic and Sexual Assault Council of Greater Miami. Mr. Duberli is also responsible for representing the LGBT community at the Human Trafficking Advisory Board in Miami Dade County, the Haitian Task Force of Miami Dade County and has been recently appointed by Miami Dade Mayor as a board member of the HIV/AIDS partnership in Miami Dade County. Mr. Duberli has received numerous recognitions such as the Justice for All Award from the Florida Attorney General and the Coral Gables Police Department in 2012. He has dedicated his career to promoting the dialogue on the inclusion of and respect for Human Rights of immigrant Latino and LGBTQI communities in the provision of public health services.

Juan Ferreiro is the M.O.V.E.S. (Mobile Operations Victim Emergency Services) Program’s Administrator. The program has paralegals who assist victims of domestic violence immediately after the arrest, assessing their needs and informing them of available community resources in order to regain control of their lives. These paralegals also collect all the necessary evidence to prosecute those who abuse their victims. The Office of the State Attorney is in charge of prosecuting all persons who commit criminal offenses.

Arabel Pérez, Domestic Violence Community Educator. I was born to Mexican parents and raised by my hard-working mother in Chicago, Illinois. I grew up in the community of Pilsen and have been witness to its metamorphosis. I received a B.A. in Science and Human Services from the University of Phoenix at Chicago. Prior to enrolling at Phoenix I received an Associates of Fine Arts from Harold Washington College. I am currently working in the social service setting with Mujeres Latinas en Accion, as a Domestic Violence Community Educator and I had previously worked with the Leadership Program. Working in the Leadership Program gave me the opportunity to interact with participants who had experience Domestic Violence before. The following quote embraces part of my ideals but also a vocation I have encompassed professionally, “We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, and more laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that.” I currently reside on the South side of Chicago.
